In the years since the development of open pit mining, technology has marched. Steam engines were replaced by electric, which in turn were replaced by diesel, and trucks and shovels have grown to a scale unimaginable. The booming mining town of Clifton was officially founded in 1873. In 1874 the Longfellow Copper Mining Company, founded by Henry & Charles Lesinsky, built a smelter where Chase Creek emptied into the San Francisco River. Clifton with the Arizona Copper Company and the Shannon Copper Company concentrators and smelters were all thriving. In 1921, Phelps Dodge became sole owner of the entire mining District through its purchase of the Arizona Copper Company which had been the largest copper operation in the Clifton-Morenci District since 1882.

An article entitled “The London Mining Journal predicts that Arizona will soon pass Michigan and Montana in the production of copper,” appearing in the June 1, 1899 issue of the Copper Era , shows early evidence that Arizona mining towns were boosting their copper output.
